Located in a historic district in Newton, Massachusetts, this renovated home was created from the bones of an existing tract house on a beautiful wooded site. Working within a modest budget, Maryann Thompson Architects was able to change the look and feel of the home by utilizing the home's foundation and plumbing locations and staying within the existing footprint. The new design expands the home from a single story with usable square footage of 2200 sf to a three story home of 5500 sf, with 4 bedrooms and 5 ½ bathrooms.

The renovation adds a second floor to the home, and creates usable space in the basement. New living areas include a family room, a Master Bedroom suite on the second floor, two studies – his and hers – and the creation of an exercise room and TV room in the basement.

The home faces north, so interventions were required to ensure the home was not dark. The design uses clerestory windows to bring in light from above, and sections to create spaces in the roof for light. The home is clad in stained red cedar siding, and the interior is painted in different subtle shades of white to reflect the light.
